Abstract

The artists series was inaugurated in September 1957 to provide access to ideas, art forms, programs, and performances for students and to offer the finest in the arts to a community in a geographically isolated area. The collection documents the artists series and contains records of summer arts festivals; performers (orchestras, theater, dance, dance residencies, Pennsylvania ballet, jazz, lecturers, programs and brochures, performance contracts, photographs); films, music, entertainment and artist management correspondence. Additionally there are artists series administration records, surveys by the artists series, and financal records.

The artists series was inaugurated in September 1957 to provide access to ideas, art forms, programs, and performances for students and to offer the finest in the arts to a community in a geographically isolated area.

Scope and Contents

The collection documents the artists series and contains records of summer arts festivals; performers (orchestras, theater, dance, dance residencies, Pennsylvania ballet, jazz, lecturers, programs and brochures, performance contracts, photographs); films, music, entertainment and artist management correspondence (including the bicentennial opera, "Be Glad Then America"). Also, artists series administration (committee minutes, performing arts course, series musical equipment, miscellaneous correspondence, correspondence with deans, administrators, and staff, auditoriums and buildings),; surveys by the artists series; and finances (budget correspondence, ticketing, and fund raising).
