Biographical / Historical
Frank Dunn Kern was born June 29, 1883 in Reinbeck, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa in 1904 and a Master of Science degree from Purdue in 1907 and doctor of philosophy degree from Columbia University. He also held an honorary doctor of science degree conferred by the University of Puerto Rico in 1926. He served on the faculty of Purdue University from 1905 to 1913. A noted botanist, Kern twice served a one year term as acting dean of the University of Puerto Rico's Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering while on a leave of absence from Penn State. After his retirement he published more than 20 papers and a new book to revise and update research he started more than 60 years before. He died in State College, Pa., at the age of 90 on September 28, 1973.
