Linda Stein papers on Art Education

Linda Stein is an artist-activist, lecturer, writer, performer, video artist and educator. From 1965-1972 Stein was an art teacher at Deer Park High School on Long Island, NY. From 1972-1979, she became Artist in Residence in the Deer Park School District, receiving yearly BOCES grants. Then in 1979 and for 25 years thereafter, Stein supported her "habit" of art as the founding president of the highly successful Calligraphy Studios Inc, a business in Manhattan doing work for Tiffany, Cartier, and many celebrities and corporations around the world.

Starting in 2010, under the auspices of HAWT, her exhibition [The Fluidity of Gender: Sculpture by Linda Stein], started to travel nationally, accompanied by her feminist lecture: The Chance to be Brave, The Courage to Dare." In 2015 a second traveling event called [Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females - Tapestries and Sculpture by Linda Stein] was launched. Other traveling exhibitions are in progress, including [Displacement from Home: What to Leave, What to Take - Sculpture by Linda Stein and Exploring, Exploding, Expanding, Expression: Masculinities/Femininities, Sexism]. {tentative title} Stein Seeks to engage audiences, educators and students through participatory activities that involve performances, dialogue and curricular components.

Stein has been represented by Flomenhaft Gallery in Manhattan, New York and Longstreth Goldberg in Naples, Florida. She has also been exhibiting with the Anita Shapolsky Gallery since 1991. Her Art papers are at Smith College Archives, Sophia Smith Collection. Stein is Founding President of the non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, Have Art: Will Travel! (HAWT). Her art addresses core issues of empowerment by focusing on the ever-expanding continuum between masculinity and femininity, oppression and bullying.

Stein has been selected as one of the 2018 "21 Leaders for the 21st Century" by Women's e-News. The New York City Art Teachers Association (NYCATA) honored Stein with their 2017 Artist of the Year Award. And in 2016 the National Association of Women Artisits (NAWA) has awarded Stein as the Artist Honoree for her "Outstandig Contributions to the Arts." In 2015, Linda Stein began a working collaboration with Karen Keifer-Boyd, Penn State Professor of Art Education and Women's Gender, & Sexuality Studies, to form a Curricular Team (C-Team) of art educators and scholars who, together with the artist, would created curricular encounters, lesson plans, lecturers, workshops, publications, conferences and HAWT website called [Social Justice Art Education with Linda Stein's Art]. Overseen by the artist and chaired by Dr. Keifer-Boyd this work would focus on Stein's various art series and use her art to start conversations about social justice issues, such as bullying and bigotry. In addition to Stein and Keifer-Boyd, C-Team members (with their 2015 affiliations) include: Dr. Adetty Perez de Miles (University of North Texas, Art Education), Dr. Wanda Knight (Penn State, Art Education and Women's Gender & Sexuality Studies), Dr. Ann Holt (Executive Director HAWT, Pratt Institute ad Adelphi University, Art Education), Dr. Cheri Ehrlich (Museum of Arts and Design, Youth and Family Progams Manager), and Dr. Yen-Ju Lin (website designer).

In 2016, a Summer Teaching Institute (July 11-14, 2016) piloted its teaching methods for [Social Justice Art Education with Linda Stein's Art]. The institute took place at Stein's studio space in Tribeca, Manhattan with six student-participants, the artist, and five other facilitators from the C-Team attending in person. In addition, there were eight student-participants online from the Penn State World Campus (three-graduate-credit) Master of Professional Studies (MPS)course, AED 813: Contemporary Art and Public Pedagogy taught by Dr. Keifer-Boyd. The daily procedure was that C-Team members gave presentations followed by workshops and discussions.
