Background
Scope and Contents
This collection includes audiotapes and videotapes of speakers and miner bands at United Mine Workers (UMW) international conventions. There are also audiotapes from several regional and local UMW events. Phonograph records and audiotapes capture broadcasts and speeches by John L. Lewis, John Owens, Samuel Caddy, Thomas Kennedy, Charles Owen Rice, Charles Ferguson, William A. Boyle, George Titler, Michael Widman, John Kmetz, Arnold Miller, Harry Patrick, and Walter Mondale. Videotapes hold speeches by Cecil Roberts, Richard Trumka, and Lane Kirkland. Tape reels and cassettes document testimony at black lung disease hearings, Miller’s UMW election campaign, and press conferences and interviews with miners and their families during the Brookside strike. There is a video documentary from the Pittston strike. Several dozen Western miner oral histories were copied onto cassette from original recordings housed at archives in Colorado and Montana.
