Summary

Abstract

Juan Domingo Perón (1895-1974) was an Argentine general and politician. He served as the Minister of Labour, Vice President, and ultimately as President from June 1946-1955 and October 1973-July 1974. He was married to the Argentine actress and activist María Eva Duarte de Perón (also known as Evita), who became known as the "Spiritual Leader of the Nature" before she died of cancer at age 33 in 1952. Juan Perón was initially overthrown and exiled by a military dictatorship between 1955-1973. While in exile, he married his third and final wife María Estela Martínex de Perón (also known as Isabel). Juan Perón was reelected in 1973, however he died of a heart attack in July 1974. Following his death, he was succeeded as President by his wife Isabel Perón, however she was also overthrown by a military coup d'etat on March 24, 1976. This collection contains pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, and ephemera about politics and Peronismo in Argentina. These pamphlets include propaganda, speeches, and information about Juan, Eva, and Isabel Perón.

Background

Scope and Contents

This collection contains pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, and ephemera documenting Peronismo and politics in Argentina. The majority of this collection is in Spanish, however some materials are in other languages, including English, German, Italian, and Portuguese. The majority of these pamphlets are official government-produced propaganda and include printed speeches by political leaders, educational and teaching materials for students, and other information about Perón and Peronismo. Many pamphlets are also externally facing and market tourism and business investment opportunities in Argentina. This collection also includes pamphlets documenting the Fundación Eva Perón, commemorations of Eva Perón following her death, and a comic book venerating her life. This collection also includes some materials reflecting on the Perón era. This collection chiefly documents Peronism and the ideology of the Perón regime. Researchers should note that as the majority of the materials in this collection were created by the Peronist government, it is ideologically highly favorable to the Perón regime.

Processing Information

This collection was originally cataloged at the item level by Rare Books Room staff. After the initial cataloging, additional unnumbered material was added to the collection.

Lexy deGraffenreid reprocessed the collection in 2022 by reorganizing the material (first numerically and then alphabetically by size), inventorying the material, and housing materials in archival folders. She also rewrote the finding aid following reprocessing. She inventoried the collection in Spanish, as this is the language for the bulk of the material. She transcribed the titles of documents as written, including those written in other languages.
