Background

Biographical Note

Hans-Georg Gadamer was born on February 11, 1900 in Marburg, Germany. Gadamer showed an early aptitude for studies in philosophy and after receiving his doctoral degree in 1922 he went on to work directly with Martin Heidegger.

He was a teacher for most of his life, and published several important works: The Truth and Method, is considered his magnum opus.

Gadamer died on March 13, 2002 in Heidelberg, Germany.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence, galley proofs, lectures and manuscripts, photographs compiled by German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer. The materials comprise a significant collection of Gadamer's hermeneutics texts in early drafts, including "Vom Wort zum Begriff ("Entwurf") and "Gallarate."
