Scope and Contents
The collection consists of materials purchased and collected by the Eberly Family Special Collections Library. These items document a wide array of Black activism and expertise, including that of : labor leader, Angelo Herndon; Korean War veteran, Lieutenant Leon Gilbert of the 24th Infantry Regiment; Harlem Renaissance artist, Lois Mailou Jones; lyric tenor and composer, Roland Hayes; and the proceedings of the National Negro Congress (1936).
For scholars of book history, the book trade and Black bibliography projects, the book catalogs of University Place Book Shop (catalog nos. 93, 135, 142, and 171) with manuscript notations will be of interest.

Custodial History
While much of the custodial history for these materials remains unknown, some items were purchased in 1976 from Walter Golderwater at University Place Book Shop in Manhattan. Other items were collected from events at Penn State's University Park campus.

Digitized items from this collection are included in the Black history and visual culture digital collection.

This collection was processed and described by G. Johns, metadata specialist (2022 January 26). They arranged the collection by type of material (brochures, concert programs, pamphlets, proceedings, etc) and inventoried each at the item level for contribution to Penn State Libraries' digital collections and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).

Report of the Board of Trustees of Colored Schools of Washington and Georgetown, D.C. : made in compliance with a resolution of the Senate of the United States, passed December 8, 1870 (1871) was transferred from the Pennsylvania pamphlets collection (02433) to this collection by G. Johns (2023 March).
