Abstract
The Mainland family collection on Ernest Hemingway documents Madelaine "Sunny" Hemingway Mainland and her son Ernest Hemingway Mainland's memorialization of Sunny's brother Ernest Hemingway. This collection includes clippings, notes, typescripts of Sunny's memoir, and copies of photographs. This collection also contains a small amount of material relating to Ernest and Sunny Hemingway's mother Grace Hall Hemingway, including her manuscript sheet music, published sheet music, and a manuscript historical chart.

Scope and Contents
This collection documents Ernest Hemingway's life, death, and memorialization from the perspectives of his sister Madelaine "Sunny" Hemingway Mainland Miller and her son Ernest Hemingway Mainland. This collection chiefly contains clippings relating to Ernest Hemingway, including his World War I service, writing career, airplane crashes, and death. This collection also includes clippings relating to Ernest Hemingway's work, family, homes, and memory following his death. In addition to clippings, this collection includes notes, typescripts, and copies of photographs relating to Sunny's memoir of her brother, Sunny Hemingway Mainland's suitcase, clippings relating to mother Grace Hall Hemingway, and Grace Hall Hemingway's suitcase.

Custodial History
This collection was created and compiled by Grace Hall Hemingway, Madelaine Hemingway Mainland, and Ernest Hemingway Mainland. It was ultimately inherited by Ernest Hemingway Mainland and donated to Penn State University in 2009.
A duplicate copy of Ernest Hemingway as recalled by his high school contemporaries and Madeline Hemingway Mainland's book Ernie : Hemingway's sister "Sunny" remembers were added to the collection by archivists.
Processing Information
These materials originally arrived in the collection suitcase and another container. They did not have any known original order. Lexy deGraffenreid minimally processed this collection in fall 2021. She grouped clippings together topically, but otherwise did not impose any order. She stabilized the materials in archival containers and inventoried the collection at the folder and box-level. It is intellectually arranged in box number order.
