Background

Biographical / Historical

Esteemed British philosopher Michael Anthony Eardley Dummett (1925-2011) was knighted in 1999 for “services to Philosophy and to Racial Justice.” Dummett’s interests and writings in philosophy included intuitionism, language, the opposition of realism and anti-realism, the logical basis of metaphysics, and the philosophy of mathematics. He was an authority on voting procedures and an advocate for electoral reform. He and his wife Ann Dummett were active in organizing resistance to racism in the British government and society and worked on behalf of individuals affected by racist policies and attitudes. They co-founded the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants. Dummett authored On Immigration and Refugees, a work of moral and political philosophy.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of notes, typescripts, newsletters, articles, and publications, many with notes and corrections in Michael Dummett’s hand. The foci of the collection reflect Dummett’s academic interests in philosophy and voting procedures, and his personal passion for electoral reform and organized resistance to racism in the British government and society.

The collection is arranged into the following series: 1. Dummett's philosophical writings 2. Philosophical writings by others 3. Dummett on politics and electoral reform 4. Dummett on race and immigration, and 5. Personal papers and correspondence. Series 2, Philosophical writings by others, is alphabetically arranged by the name of the philosopher.
