Summary

Abstract

An artificial collection of materials documenting both the national women’s rights movement and the women’s suffrage movement in Pennsylvania purchased by the Eberly Family Special Collections Library.

These materials include booklets, editorial cartoons, fliers and pamphlets documenting the work of : the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters; the National League of Women Voters (U.S.); the National Women's Trade Union League of America; the Pennsylvania Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage; and the Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association.

Woman’s Party candidates represented include : Jennie Dornblum; Jessie Collet; Anna Van Skite; Elizabeth Culbertson; and Daisy Detterline; as well as Prohibitionist and Suffragist candidate, Leah Cobb Marion.

For those interested in the art of suffrage, the series of Special Suffrage Service editorial cartoons (1915) will be of interest.

Scope and Contents

The collection of booklets, editorial cartoons, fliers and pamphlets was purchased by the Eberly Family Special Collections Library. These materials document the women’s suffrage movement in the United States, with a focus on activities in Pennsylvania.

Among the organizations represented are : the National League of Women Voters (U.S.); the National Women's Trade Union League of America; the Pennsylvania Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage; the Pennsylvania Men's League for Woman Suffrage; the Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association; Pennsylvania Woman's Christian Temperance Union; the National Woman's Party; and the Woman Suffrage Society of the County of Philadelphia.

For current information on the location of these materials, please consult the Penn State University Libraries catalog via the link above. Archival collections may be housed in offsite storage. For materials stored offsite, please allow 2-3 business days for retrieval.

Custodial History

While much of the custodial history for these materials remains unknown, many items were purchased in 1971 from The Chatham Bookseller (Chatham, New Jersey).

Bound volume of women’s suffrage pamphlets (Accession 2023-0055) was purchased from Between the Covers Rare Books in May of 2023.

Processing Information

This collections was processed and described by G. Johns, metadata specialist (2022 March 31). They arranged materials by creator (Pennsylvania Association Opposed to Woman Suffgrage; Pennsylvania Men's League for Woman Suffrage; Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association; etc) at the folder level for contribution to Penn State Libraries' digital collections and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).

Mae Casey minimally processed Accession 2023-0055 (Bound volume of women’s suffrage pamphlets) at the point of accession by creating an accession record and updating the existing finding aid.
