Abstract

This collection contains a Steel Workers Organizing Committee (U.S.) scrapbook of clippings and a Steel Workers Organizing Committee (U.S.) scrapbook of black-and-white photographs documenting the strikes and labor disputes, as well as various conventions, of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers of North America, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (U.S.), and the United Steelworkers of America. Photographs include those of Rasmussen with the convention badges and buttons of this collection.

Biographical / Historical

Harold Rasmussen was a labor official involved in organizing U.S. steel workers. A heater helper in the south Chicago works of Republic Steel and president of Blue Eagle Lodge No.57 of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers, Rasmussen became a staff representative of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) in 1936. He was involved in organizing activities for SWOC in the Midwest and the South until July 1942, when he was assigned to District 30 of the newly formed United Steelworkers of America (USWA), headquartered in Indianapolis. After serving in the U.S. Army, he rejoined District 30, working from December 1946 to 1970.
