Henry W. Popp came to Penn State as assistant professor of botany after receiving a doctorate at the University of Chicago in 1930. He became head of the department in 1950 and retired in 1958.

Biographical / Historical
Henry W. Popp was born November 19, 1892, in Millvale Branch, Pennsylvania, and attended the Pittsburgh Academy and Carnegie Institute of Technology before enrolling at Pennsylvania State College. Henry W. Popp served as an assistant in zoology and entomology departments during his senior year at The Pennsylvania State College and was granted his bachelor of science in 1917 and a M.S. in 1922. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Popp then returned to Penn State as assistant professor of botany and became associate professor in 1930 and full professor in 1937. He was named head of the department in 1950. He retired July 1, 1958, with the rank of professor emeritus. A prolific writer, he wrote and co-authored numerous science books and was a contributor to many publications and the author of a number of technical bulletins. In 1945 he wrote the section on botany in the Encyclopedia Britannica yearbook. Henry Popp died at the age of 96 on February 3, 1989.

Popp, includes his collection of historical booklets, course work both as a student and professor, his personal diaries, daybooks and ledgers, dictionaries, sheet music and music books, correspondence, railroad timetables/maps, postcards and photographs.
