Background

Biographical / Historical

Extension Services were created by the Smith/Lever Act of 1914. Agents who educated women about household sciences were known as home demonstration agents. The first home demonstration agent in Pennsylvania was Myrtle Allen, hired in 1916 by the Mercer County extension program. Pennsylvania home economics representatives associated as the County Home Economics Extension Representatives Association under the acronym CHEERS until 1946. That year, it reorganized under the name of the Pennsylvania Association of Home Economics Extension Representatives and became affiliated with the national association (National Home Demonstration Agents Association (NHDAA) founded in 1933). Marguerite Erickson of Northampton County was the first president. It later changed its name in 1955 to the Pennsylvania Association of Extension Home Economists (PAEHE). NHDAA changed its name to the National Association of Extension Home Economists (NAEHE) in 1964. In 1995, the national and state associations changed their names to the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) and the Pennsylvania Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (PEAFCS). As of 2010, PEAFCS was the largest state association in the northeast and one of the top ten in the country.
