Summary

Abstract

This collection documents the Fleming family of central Pennsylvania. George Hoenshel Fleming, Sr. worked as a general manager and engineer with the Pressed Steel Car Company of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Materials include a commemorative scrapbook Fleming created to document an event honoring Pressed Steel Car Company's production in service of World War II. The scrapbook documents a company event honoring the efforts of workers who awarded the Army-Navy "E" Production Award on March 23, 1943. During World War II, the Pressed Steel Car Company successfully mobilized and converted from peace time production to produce tanks and bomb shell casings for the war effort. The scrapbook includes: photographs, an event program, two promotional broadsides, event ribbons, and letters of invitation to corporate dignitaries and legislators.

In addition to the scrapbook, the Fleming family papers the involvement of the family in the Pennsylvania State University community. Additional materials include photographs of the George Hoenshel Fleming, Sr. with his wife Estelle Fleming in the company of Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Phinchot as well as an autobiographical booklet created in 1994 by George H. Fleming, Jr., a Pennsylvania State University professor and community member.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a scrapbook documenting George Hoenshel Fleming, Sr.'s work as an industrial laborer at the Pressed Steel Car Company of McKeesport, Pennsylvania during World War II as well as photographs and images of Fleming, Sr from 1943. The collection additionally autobiographical materials Fleming, Sr.'s son, George Hoenshelf Fleming, Jr., and documents the Fleming family's involvement with the Pennsylvania State University community.

This collection was donated to the Special Collections Library by Margaret (Peggy) Fleming Lay in 2017.

Processing Information

This collection was accessioned and minimally described by Alissa Zawoyski in 2019. At that time, all materials were placed in acid-free boxes and acid-free folders to ensure their preservation. James Quigel selected George Hoenshel Fleming, Sr.'s scrapbook for digitization as part of the "Beneath the Surface and Cast in Steel" Digital Project. Grant funding, generously sponsored by the Council for Library and Information Resources, supported the creation of digital surrogates to demonstrate the collection's relevance to the rise of industrial unions in the United States.
