Background

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 122 pamphlets, programs, newsletters, and maps created chiefly during the regime of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina and dating into the Presidency of Joaquín Balaguer. Materials are chiefly transcripts of speeches political leaders, government propaganda, and programs for cultural events. The materials are accompanied by two microfilm reels of the materials created by University Libraries staff in 1980. The pamphlets and event programs produced by the Universidad de Santo Domingo, municipanities, and the Secretaria de Estado de Educación y Bellas Artes during this period demonstrate the influence of the Trujillo regime on the Dominican Republic as a whole through their praise of the Rafael Trujillo and the government. This collection also documents the official propaganda of the Trujillo regime, including pamphlets, newsletters, and an English biography of Rafael Trujillo produced in the United States in support of the regime. The materials in this collection produced after Rafael Trujillo's assassination in 1961 are chiefly cultural institution-related, including histories, programs, and the poetry publication Una Calle de Sangre.

Custodial History

This collection consists of publications authored and published by multiple individuals and institutions. The majority of the material was published in the Dominican Republic by government offices, municipalities, and the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Items in English were published both in the Dominican Republic and in the United States by the regime (under government entities such as the Dominican Chamber of Commerce or Consulate General of the Dominican republic). The Stanley Walker biography of Rafael Trujillo was published by the Caribbean Library f New York by arrangement with the Dominican Republic Information Center and was filed with the Department of Justice under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. El Generalísimo Trujillo y Colombia was published in Colombia by the Imprenta Nacional de Colombia.

This collection was collected by and acquired from an unknown source (or sources) prior to 1980. In 1980, the University Libraries split this collection into two groupings and microfilmed the material as the "The Trujillo Era in the Dominican Republic" and "Dominican Republic: pamphlets on history and culture". The materials were then reconstituted and stored as a single archival collection while the microfilm reel "Dominican Republic: pamphlets on history and culture" was cataloged separately. In 2019, archivists reconstituted the second microfilm reel into the collection.
