Abstract

This collection contains the research and personal papers of Della M. Roy, Professor Emerita of Materials Science at Penn State. This collection consists of Della Roy’s research papers, reports, conference papers, and personal materials relating to the practical application of cement-based materials. Other material sciences researchers’ works are present in the collection, including Dr. Roy’s husband, Rustum Roy.

Background

Biographical / Historical

Della M. Roy (November 3, 1926- March 27, 2021) was a research scientist focusing on materials science. Her primary research interests were in cement and concrete research. After 53 years at Penn State, she retired as Professor Emerita of Materials Science. Throughout her career, Dr. Roy was an important model and mentor for women in science. In 1971, Dr. Roy founded the journal Cement and Concrete and remained its editor until 2005. In 1987, she became the first female materials scientist and the third woman overall to be inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Roy was also the first woman to be elected to the World Academy of Ceramics.

Scope and Contents

The Della M. Roy papers contains five series, Reports, Research, Conferences and lectures, and Personal. The majority of these materials pertain to Dr. Roy and her colleagues’ material sciences research. Also included photographs and one VHS tape.

Custodial History

Della M. Roy created and collected these papers. This collection was transferred to the Eberly Family Special Collections Library by the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment in 2016.
