Abstract

The Pierre de Lagarde Boal Papers contain the personal papers and three hundred photographs and foreign postcards of Pierre de Lagarde Boal, a member of the Boal family of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, for the period 1887-1990. Amidst the correspondence, diaries and financial papers of the collection are letters from the French front written by Captain Pierre de Lagarde Boal while serving as an American volunteer in the French Cavalry from 1914-15.

Background

Biographical or Historical Note

Born in Thonon-les-Baine, France in 1895, Pierre de Lagarde Boal was the son of Mathilde de Lagarde Boal and (Colonel) Theodore Davis Boal who emigrated to America in 1898. De Lagarde Boal served as an American volunteer in the French cavalry from 1914-15 and was later transferred to the Lafayette Escadrille (Flying Corps) composed of Americans fighting for France. Boal was awarded a Legion of Honor citation, the Purple Heart, the Croix de la Guerre with gilt star and the Lafayette Flying Corps ribbon. A career foreign officer, Boal served in embassies in Yugoslavia, Poland, Switzerland, Peru, Canada, Mexico and at the State Department in Washington, D.C. Later, he was an ambassador to Bolivia and Nicaragua. Mr. Boal died in Paris, France in May of 1966 at the age of seventy and is buried in the vault of the Columbus Chapel in Boalsburg, PA, along with his father Theodore Davis Boal.
