Background

Biographical Note

The Department of Organization was founded on 1 February 1965 with a mandate to bring non-union workers into the United Mine Workers (UMW). John T. Kmetz was its first director. On 1 November 1968, the director of the UMW Research and Marketing Department, Michael F. Widman, transferred to the Department of Organization, replacing Kmetz. Widman retired on 31 December 1972, and LaVerne Lawrence served as acting director in 1973, during which year the Department of Organization closed and its duties were absorbed into the office of the international vice-president, Michael Trbovich.

Collection Overview

The collection documents efforts to bring non-union workers and companies into the United Mine Workers (UMW). Court records, narratives of disputes, and detailed summaries of points of contention illuminate ongoing tensions among union workers, non-union workers, and company management. Most of these documents were generated by John T. Kmetz and Michael F. Widman during their terms as director of the Department of Organization, but there are also arbitration case files generated by Widman in his capacity as secretary of the UMW Joint Board of Review. Widman evidently integrated these arbitration documents into the departmental records because the cases address aspects of job classification pertaining to organizing, e.g., whether engineering or clerical positions ought to be brought into the union, whether particular aspects of workmen's activities were improperly classified within the union scheme, or whether a category of company (such as a water purification plant) was covered by the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement.

Collection Arrangement

The collection is arranged in five series: Series 1: Reference Files (1946-1978); Series 2: District Reports (1968-1974); Series 3: Case Files (1948-1973); Series 4: Company Files (1960-1975); Series 5: Photographs (1967-1971).
