Abstract

Dale B. Harris was a native of Elkhart, Indiana and a graduate of DePauw University (1935). He received a Master of Arts and a doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota. Harris taught as an assistant in educational psychology at the University of Minnesota and served as the head of the Institute of Child Welfare before. In 1959 he was appointed Professor of Psychology in charge of the educational-developmental section of the Pennsylvania State University's Department of Psychology. The Harris papers consist of children's drawings and drawing tests from all over the world, research studies, papers, conference proceedings, correspondence and faculty administrative materials.

Biographical / Historical

Dale B. Harris was a native of Elkhart, Indiana. He graduated from DePauw University in 1935 and received a Master of Arts and a doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota. He began his teaching career as assistant in educational psychology at the University of Minnesota and served for many years as the head of the Institute of Child Welfare. During World War II, he was on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps.

In 1959, Dale B. Harris joined the Pennsylvania State University and was appointed Professor of Psychology. He was in charge of the educational-developmental section within the Department of Psychology and became head of the department in 1963. He retired on July 1, 1978 with the rank of Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Human Development.

Dale B. Harris' research focussed on childhood behavior and published widely in professional and popular journals and magazines. He was the editor of the Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography from 1964 to 1971. Dr. Harris was a student of Dr. Florence Goodenough who developed the Draw a Man intelligance test. He expended on her work and is best known for his research and his 1963 publication with Dr. Goodenough, Children's Drawing as Measures of Intellectual Maturity.

The Dale B. Harris papers document Dr. Harris' research and writings. He published a book with Florence Goodenough called Children's Drawing as Measures of Intellectual Maturity in 1963 with Florence Goodenough as well as the Goodenough-Harris Draw a Man test. His research interests included child development (maturational models), behavior and delinquency, violence and war, family influences, and social effects. The Harris papers document this research and include of children's drawings and drawing tests from across the world, research studies, papers, conference proceedings, correspondence and faculty administrative materials.
