Abstract
Irwin Richman received a doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965, while working for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. In 1968, he joined the founding faculty of the American studies program at Penn State Harrisburg, Capitol College, teaching until his retirement in 2003.

Biographical / Historical
Irwin Richman was born on January 1, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY. Richman is an American History educator, consultant, lecturer. Past vice chairman Pennsylvania History Preservation Board; lecturer numerous groups, including Bradford County (Pennsylvania) Medical Society, Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion Society, Landis Valley Associations, Dauphin County History Society; Member Society Architectural Historians (conference presenter), National Trust for History Preservation, Garden Conservancy.
Richman has held various positions: Pennsylvania History and Museum Commission, Harrisburg, 1961—1968. Curator science, industry and technical William Penn Memorial Museum (now State Museum Pennsylvania), 1965—1968. Professor American studies and history Pennsylvania State University, 1968—2003, past chairman graduate program in American studies, professor emeritus, since 2003.
Director research and development heirloom seed project Landis Valley Museum, Lancaster, since 2004. Architectural history consultant National Park Service, S Army Civil Engineering, City of Harrisburg, Heritage Center Museum Lancaster County. Lecturer continuing education program Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, 1994-1997.
Presenter numerous conferences, including American Studies Association, American Folklore Association, American Aesthetics Association, Catskill Institute. Commonwealth speaker Pennsylvania Humanities Council, since 1996. Speaker in field., freelance museum exhibition curator.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of research notes and files of the historian Irwin Richman concerning American arts and architecture, Pennsylvania Dutch arts and crafts, the history of the Hudson River Valley and Catskills, and history of medicine in Pennsylvania. The collection also contains his correspondence and some academic and administrative records.
