Background
Biographical / Historical
Edward Eyre Hunt (1922-1991) served in the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II, and returned to do graduate research at Harvard University. He traveled to Yap, an island in Micronesia where he learned Yapese and wrote his doctoral dissertation on demography. He received a masters and doctorate from Harvard University (1949, 1951), did special studies in human medicine, and taught at Harvard University and the City College of New York before joining the Penn State faculty as professor of anthropology in 1969. Dr. Hunt was an originator of the field of medical anthropology, researching evolutionary aspects of human growth, body composition, dental and skeletal morphogenesis, and demography and population genetics of non-western human societies. Hunt was an accomplished trumpet and jazz guitarist. His wife, Vilma Hunt was professor of environmental health at Penn State. The Hunts retired in 1985 to Magnolia, Massachusetts, where he died in 1991.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of extensive reference and original research files, with data related to physical (including genetic) anthropology. Reference materials include articles, conference papers, bulletins, and some correspondence. Research materials include original data sets from hospitals, dental clinics, and a scientific expedition to Yap in Micronesia, as well as computer printouts and cards analyzing this data. Scattered throughout the research data are restricted medical records, photographs and negatives of human research subjects. Also included are restricted, non-public student materials.
