Background
Biographical / Historical
The first significant research performed at Penn State took place in 1881 as agricultural study at the Jordan Fertility Plots. By 1936, the university received funding for its Engineering Experiment Station, providing the resources to skyrocket Penn State's quantity of research to number one in the country. Due to this rapid expansion, the Office of the Vice President for Research and its Administrative Committee on Research (ACOR) were established in 1957, followed by approval of the intercollege research programs in 1963. ACOR was reorganized in 1972, and an Associate Vice President for Research was apparently created shortly thereafter. Penn State continues to focus on three types of research: basic, with the goal of knowledge; applied, with the goal of solving practical problems; and development, with the goal of production. The Associate Vice President for Research is a position within the Penn State administrative system currently filled by three people. Each of the three associate vice presidents directs a specific series of research programs or initiatives.
